Most older homes with gas furnaces in New Jersey will find that they have the conventional type.  These are less efficient and work on the process that the gas which is burned is initially used to heat the exchanger and then is vented quickly.  This leaves a lot of the energy lost as it is vented out of the system.

A newer more efficient style is the condensing furnace.  This type is different in that it contains two heat exchangers.  The first works similar in capturing the energy in the form of heat from burning gases and the second heat exchanger then is used to absorb the same gases which have condensed exited the first exchanger.

Gas Furnace Efficiency Levels

The standard AFUE rating (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) is used in the HVAC industry to set levels and categorize equipment.

  • 55% to 72% AFUE is considered older, obsolete technology – Low Efficiency
  • 78% range is the lowest AFUE level allowed for new furnaces – Low Efficiency
  • Low 80 percentages AFUE – Mid or Standard Efficiency
  • Percentages in the 90s are considered – High Efficiency

Energy Star standards set a AFUE of 90% or greater to qualify for its gas furnace models in New Jersey.

9 Signs for a Furnace Replacement in New Jersey

There are some signs of a Furnace unit ready to be replaced so if you are sensing any of these give us a call before it becomes an emergency:

  • Age – Furnaces typically last 16 – 20 years, however extreme conditions, improper installation or cheap / bargain units will have a shorter lifespan.  This is a great time to contact us and start shopping for a energy efficient unit.  Waiting until the unit fails completely usually means that you make a poor decision in an emergency situation.  Being prepared and knowing is better way to reduce your long term energy bills.
  • Your furnace frequently malfunctions or stops working.  If your furnace is older and runs louder you can usually hear it running at strange intervals or at short or long intervals instead of the “normal” cycles.
  • Your heating costs gradually went up over the past years.  This can be difficult to know because one New Jersey winter may be more harsh than another and fuel costs can fluctuate but when looking over the monthly or yearly bills you can get a good estimate.
  • You’ve neglected furnace / HVAC maintenance for a long time, but then you are having regular issues with repairs.  Most cases and units incur the most repairs in the last 2 years.  Much like an automobile, you will have to decide when it is the right time to make the replacement.  We will glad to help you with options, selection and our experienced opinion.  Another good tip is to check into our regular maintenance plans.  They really do save you money, bring you peace of mind and save you from an emergency in New Jersey’s winters.
  • Older, poorly functioning Furnaces lack the ability to keep a house moisturized and this leads to an excessively dry atmosphere inside the home.  Some units have a humidity setting and this fails as the unit ages.  This excessive dryness can irritate allergies, produce coughs, increase dust in the air and dry throat, nose and skin.  You may even notice plants suffering and needing watered more frequently as well as creaking floors and furniture.
  • Is the thermostat doing it’s heating job efficiently?  If some rooms are cold while others are comfortable it can be that the unit lacks the power to produce enough heat.  At the same time the furnace may not be able to push enough air through the system.
  • When the furnace is NOT electric and has a Pilot light that light should be blue (not yellow) a yellow flame usually indicates a very poorly running furnace and can be an indication of carbon monoxide poisoning.  You may also notice soot remnants on the outside of the unit or nearby.  The furnace vent pipes may be moist or even rusted.  All of these are indicators there could be a problem and needs attention.
  • Are you Hearing new and different noises while heating?  Like your vehicle, a furnace can produce a wide range of noises, none of which are a good sign.  Whistling, popping, snapping, banging, rattling or even squealing are a sure fire warning that something is wrong and most likely failure is in the near future.
  • Headaches, Burning in the eyes or nose, flu like feelings, nausea or feeling disoriented can all be signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.  Poorly built units can develop cracks in the heat exchanger and this can lead to leaks which can fill the surrounding area with harmful gases.  This is serious and can be detected with a carbon monoxide unit found at most home improvement stores.

To save you headache, we also offer convenient maintenance plans to ensure your furnace is ready for heating in New Jersey and there will be no surprises.  We are your heating and furnace repair company in New Jersey.
